Walking, wheeling and cycling routes | Sevenoaks District Council

Walking, wheeling and cycling routes

We're working on a number of environmentally-friendly walking, wheeling and cycle schemes across the District.

The routes will provide people on foot, wheelers - those on scooters, parents with prams and wheelchair users - and riders with safe routes in and between some towns and villages.

Opening of the Sevenoaks East to West walking, wheeling and cycling route

The route will open on Saturday 11 October 2025 with an afternoon of family activities, including community bike rides, a free bike repair workshop, goodie bag giveaways and more!

Most activities are free, and you can just turn up on the day.

Please bring your own cycle or scooter for the rides. Advance booking for the rides is recommended.

More about the Sevenoaks town East to West route

We worked with Kent County Council to provide the new walking, wheeling and cycling route for Sevenoaks town linking Wildernesse in the east to Riverhead in the west.

The route links Trinity, Weald of Kent and Tunbridge Wells Boys Grammar schools in the east of Sevenoaks with Amherst and Riverhead schools in the west. The route passes by Knole Academy, Sevenoaks Primary and Walthamstow Junior schools and close to the rail station and other local facilities.

In June and July 2023, we asked the community for their views on our proposals. They were asked for their thoughts on specific sections of the route and if they supported the proposal. We received almost 500 responses. The survey showed strong overall support for the route (61%), but residents raised some concerns with the Bradbourne Park Road and St James’s Road sections and the loss of parking spaces. You can view the full results of the consultation.

In response, we amended the route. It now goes through Cavendish Avenue, Oakdene Road and Bradbourne Vale Road instead of Clockhouse Lane, Bradbourne Park Road and St James Road. Seven on-street car parking spaces at the junction of Bradbourne Road and Bradbourne Vale Road were relocated to Bradbourne Vale Road along with an additional six spaces.

The project was funded by a £1.2 million Government grant.

Otford to Sevenoaks route

We are at the early stages of developing a walking, wheeling and cycling route linking Otford to Sevenoaks.

The proposed two-mile route will provide walkers, wheelers (people on scooters, parents with prams and wheelchair users) and riders with a route from the centre of Otford to Bat & Ball in Sevenoaks, linking shops, local attractions, facilities and two rail stations.

It will offer safer opportunities for residents to exercise, benefitting their health, while improving air quality and helping to cut the District’s carbon footprint. The route could also take some cars off the road, especially at busy school times, helping to reduce traffic congestion, so there’s something for everyone.

The route is part of our wider plan to create a network of safe and attractive walking and cycling routes and will complement the Sevenoaks East to West route, which is currently being built.

We have already secured £184,000 from Active Travel England to develop designs for this route and we have appointed transport experts Phil Jones Associates to carry out this work.

During June and July 2025, we asked for residents' views on our initial route designs. The survey results will be reported to a future meeting of the Sevenoaks Joint Transportation Board.

Otford to Sevenoaks via Seal

We are at the early stages of developing a walking, wheeling and cycling route linking Otford to Sevenoaks via Seal.

The proposed route could include significant improvements along the A25.

Swanley town

We have appointed cycling and walking experts Sustrans to help develop a new Walking and Cycling plan in Swanley.

In June 2023, Sustrans ran a consultation at White Oak Leisure Centre and an online consultation in July to gather views on possible routes and to understand what deters people from cycling and walking.

Sustrans have drafted a plan that will be used to bid for Government funding to build new walking and cycling routes in the town
