Work has started on new housing project on land previously occupied by the old White Oak Leisure Centre. Income from the project is helping to pay for the town’s new £22 million leisure centre.
The contractor Skillcrown Homes has been appointed to run the project. Once finished, a public path from Hilda May Avenue to Juniper Walk will open to the public.
The project consists of 60 high quality homes: 15 three-bedroom town houses with gardens and 45 one and two-bedroom flats.
All homes will have a car parking space along with visitor parking and secure cycle storage.
The scheme will be environmentally efficient with solar panels, air source heat pumps and will be insulated to high standards. To further support the environment, a substantial shared community garden will be at the heart of the site. Mature trees will be kept, screening the site from neighbouring properties, along with new trees, soft landscaping and green corridors to enhance biodiversity.
Planning permission for the project was approved on 12 January 2026.
