Councillors are required by law to notify the Council's Monitoring Officer of their Disclosable Pecuniary Interests. These are as defined in the Relevant Authorities (Disclosable Pecuniary Interests) Regulations 2012. 'Pecuniary' is a legal term to mean consisting of or relating to money.

- A Councillor with a disclosable pecuniary interest in a matter to be considered at a meeting is prohibited from knowingly participating in that matter unless a dispensation is in place.
- A Councillor with a disclosable pecuniary interest in a matter is prohibited from knowingly making formal decisions on his own about that matter unless a dispensation is in place.
- The Localism Act 2011 introduced criminal offences relating to failure to register disclosable pecuniary interests and participation by members in business in which they have disclosable pecuniary interests.
- The register is a document that can be consulted when or before an issue arises, and so allows the public, Council staff and fellow Councillors to know what interests a Councillor has and whether they might give rise to a possible conflict of interest.
