Fly-tipper prosecuted

A fly tipper who dumped commercial and potentially dangerous waste has been handed a suspended prison sentence along with 150 hours of unpaid work,

following an investigation by Sevenoaks District Council and Gravesham Borough Council.

Mircea Mamai, 45 from Erith in Kent, pleaded guilty to fly-tipping offences at Sevenoaks Magistrate’s Court on Friday 28 August 2026.

The incident occurred in February 2024 at Redmans Lane near Shoreham, which is close to Castle Farm. The Council’s Environmental Enforcement Team were alerted to the waste and went to investigate.

Among the waste, the Council found an invoice for a scrap metal company which included a vehicle registration number, registered to Mr Mamai. Using this information, they were able to find ANPR footage of the vehicle in close proximity to the fly tipped waste the night before the incident.

Gravesham Borough Council also found evidence that Mr Mamai had fly-tipped on the same night in Batts Road, Cobham.

Mr Mamai was summoned to court several times between 2024 and 2026 but did not attend his hearings.

When he was brought to court, Mr Mamai pleaded guilty to both cases of fly-tipping and was given 28-week custodial prison sentence suspended for 18 months. He was also ordered to complete 150 hours of unpaid work and pay compensation and costs to both Council’s, totalling £1,500.

Cllr Irene Roy, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Cleaner and Greener says: “This prosecution is a great result for our Environmental Enforcement team. They were able to trace the fly-tipped waste back to Mr Mamai by carefully going through the waste he dumped.

“Fly tipping is illegal, and we will not tolerate it in our District. I’d like to thank our partners at Kent County Council and Gravesham Borough Council for their support in this investigation.”
