The Deputy Lieutenant, Lord Alastair Colgrain, joined Sevenoaks District Council’s Vice-Chairman, Cllr Margot McArthur, to celebrate Commonwealth Day (Monday 9 March 2026).

The day is an international celebration of the Commonwealth of Nations marked by a multi-faith service at Westminster Abbey in London.

Hosted outside Sevenoaks District Council’s offices, the Commonwealth flag was raised at 10am with prayers led by Reverend Anne Bourne.

Other guests included Leader of the Council, Cllr Kevin Maskell, Sevenoaks Town Council Deputy Mayor, Cllr Victoria Granville, and Riverhead Parish Council Chairman, Cllr Avril Hunter.

Cllr Margot McArthur, says: “Commonwealth Day is about celebrating the unity and inclusivity of the Commonwealth and I am excited to be part of an event that is taking place across Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Americas, the Pacific and Europe.

“The focus of this year’s day is 'Unlocking opportunities together for a prosperous Commonwealth’. This highlights how the 56 member countries can rally together to face today’s challenges and unlock opportunities that can deliver shared and lasting prosperity for all who live in the Commonwealth.”
