Council launches Bradbourne Lakes naming competition

Published: Wednesday, 16th April 2025

Residents are invited to take part in a competition to name the five historic Bradbourne Lakes in Sevenoaks.

Sevenoaks District Council is working on a £2.1 million project, ‘Bradbourne Re-bourne’, to rejuvenate Bradbourne Lakes.

The Council wants to work with the local community, park visitors and schools to come up with names for the five lakes.

Entries can reflect the spirit, culture, history or natural beauty of the park, which dates back to around 1740.

The winners will be invited to the lakes opening ceremony with the winning lake names included on new park signage.

To take part in the competition, visit www.sevenoaks.gov.uk/bradbournelakes.

The deadline to enter is midnight on Monday 23 June 2025.

Cllr Irene Roy, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Cleaner and Greener, says: “Bradbourne Lakes are a jewel in the Sevenoaks crown and have long been a favourite destination for visitors from both far and wide.

“As part of our work to overhaul this much-loved park, we want to name all five lakes. So we’re inviting our communities to join us in this exciting opportunity to leave a lasting mark on our historic lakes.”

The Council’s ‘Bradbourne Re-bourne’ project is the biggest overhaul of Bradbourne Lakes since they were built nearly 300 years ago.

The project started in 2025 and is being funded by a £1.6 million grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund and £502,000 of funding from housing developers.

The improvements are expected to take about three years.
