You will need a licence from us to place street furniture, such as tables and chairs, on a public pavement.
We have taken temporary responsibility from Kent County Council (KCC) for issuing these permits. A licence will run for a minimum of three months up to 30 September 2024.
As part of the application, you are required to complete and display a notice advertising your application. You should display the notice on your premises from the day you submit your application and for the next seven days.
You can put tables and chairs on your own land and on someone else’s land without a licence but you will need permission from the landowner.

Before you apply, please view the Government guidance on pavement licences.
Your application should comply with the pavement licence conditions and Pavement Licensing Policy.
The licence application fee is £100.
For new applicants (who do not currently have a Pavement Licence) – you will be required to provide the following documentation in support of your application:
- Two plans - one showing where your proposal is situated in relation to the surrounding area. You must clearly mark the site boundary in red on the plan. The other plan to show the extent of the area requested (with measurements) showing the position of proposed street furniture
- Photographs of proposed street furniture and, if possible, manufacturers literature and details of furniture to be used.
- Proof of public liability insurance which covers up to £5 million
For existing Pavement Licence Holders wishing to extend their current Pavement Licence (with no changes) – you will be required to provide the following documentation in support of your application:
