Parliamentary General Election - 4 July 2024

A Parliamentary General Election has been called and will be held on Thursday 4 July 2024.

Important information about the deadlines to register to vote or to apply for a postal vote, proxy vote or Voter Authority Certificate are set out on this page.


Election candidates

Seven candidates have been nominated to contest the Sevenoaks Constituency at the General Election on Thursday 4 July 2024.

The candidates are:

  • Adam Hibbert – Social Democratic Party
  • Elwyn Lloyd Jones – Rejoin EU
  • Laura Marie Manston – The Green Party
  • James Douglas Milmine – Reform UK
  • Denise Roseanne Scott-McDonald – Labour and Co-operative Party
  • Richard Giles Streatfeild – Liberal Democrat
  • Laura Trott – The Conservative Party

Register to vote

The deadline for registering to vote at the General Election on Thursday 4 July is midnight on Tuesday 18 June 2024.

If you register after the deadline you will not be eligible to vote on Thursday 4 July 2024.

What to do if you have recently moved

If you have recently moved and need to register at a new address, or update the address you are currently registered at, you will need to complete a new registration.

Before you start

To register, you will need to provide your:

  • National Insurance number (but you can still register if you do not have one)
  • Date of birth

Voting by post

The deadline to apply for a postal vote or postal proxy vote, and to make changes to an existing postal or postal proxy vote, is 5pm on Wednesday 19 June 2024.

If you had a postal vote arrangement in place before 31 May, your postal vote pack will be despatched around 19 June.

If you applied for a postal vote after the 31 May and before the deadline on 19 June, your postal vote pack will be despatched around 26 June.

If you are registered to vote by post and would like to cancel this arrangement, please email your request to elections@sevenoaks.gov.uk. The deadline for cancelling a postal vote or an existing proxy vote arrangement is 5pm on Wednesday 19 June 2024.

Voting by proxy

The deadline to apply for a new proxy vote is 5pm on Wednesday 26 June 2024.

If you are registered for a proxy vote and would like to cancel this arrangement, please email your request to elections@sevenoaks.gov.uk or call us on 01732 227000. The deadline for cancelling a proxy vote arrangement is 5pm on Wednesday 26 June 2024.

If, after 5pm on Wednesday 26 June, you find you cannot attend the polling station to vote you may be entitled to apply for an emergency proxy vote.

 

Voting in a polling station

If you are registered to vote, and have not been issued with a postal vote, you can vote in your local polling station. You can find the address of your polling station by visiting wheredoivote.co.uk.

Everyone voting in person in a polling station must show a valid for of voter ID before they can be issued with a ballot paper.

 

Voter ID

Anyone voting in a polling station must present a valid form of identification (photo ID). This requirement was introduced by the Government and applies to all voters who vote in person or by proxy in a polling station.

Photo ID is not required for postal voting.

Voter Authority Certificate

If you do not have any of the accepted photo ID, and you want to vote at the polling station, you will need to apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate. This is a photographic identification for the purposes of voting.

The deadline to apply for a Voter Authority Certificate is 5pm on Wednesday 26 June.

You can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate online. It’s free to apply. You’ll need:

  • a recent, digital photo of yourself
  • your National Insurance number

You can still apply if you do not have a National Insurance number. You’ll need to provide other documents to prove your identity, for example a birth certificate, bank statement and utility bill.
