Benefit overpayments

Overpayments can be caused if you do not tell us about a change quickly enough. If you have been paid too much, we will write to you explaining:

  • The reason for the overpayment/reduction in your entitlement
  • How much you have been overpaid
  • What period it relates to

Housing Benefit

For Housing Benefit overpayment(s) we will also tell you when and how the money needs to be paid back. If you are still receiving Housing Benefit, we will make a weekly deduction from your ongoing entitlement until the debt is repaid. If you are no longer in receipt of Housing Benefit, an invoice will be sent to you.

Once you receive a benefit overpayment invoice you should pay it straight away. Please make sure you quote the invoice number shown on your benefit overpayment invoice with every payment.
