Parking commercial or large vehicles on-street
The issue of commercial vehicles that are parked on-street is unfortunately not one that falls within the remit of the District Council.
If the vehicle is not parked on a yellow line or in a parking bay, is taxed, insured and roadworthy (subject to an appropriate MOT test) and it is parked safely then there is no action that can be taken by the District Council.
However there are two situations that may fall in to the jurisdiction of other Authorities;
- Under the Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations 1989 (Regulation 24), if a large vehicle is parked on-street through the hours of darkness without displaying lights then it could be committing an offence and it would be an issue for police enforcement.
Any cases should be reported to Kent Police on their non-emergency telephone number 01622 690690.
- The use of large and commercial vehicles is subject to the company operating the vehicle having an appropriate 'Operators License', which would regulate the usage of the vehicle and should specify the normal depot that that vehicle should be operated from.
Whilst this does not preclude the parking of commercial vehicles on street (to facilitate long distance deliveries etc) any incidents of regular parking of commercial vehicles on-street could be reported to the appropriate Traffic Commissioner in writing, stating the registration of the vehicle and the operator's name and contact details.
Any photographic evidence may also be appropriate for supporting any complaint. The address of the appropriate office for the Sevenoaks area is as follows;
