Residents of Sevenoaks District are represented at the European, national and local level by people elected to democratic bodies. Each body has different roles and responsibilities and provides different services.
The Houses of Parliament
MPs (Members of Parliament) are elected to Parliament in Westminster. Parliament has three main functions:
General elections are held at least every five years. The next general elections will take place, at the latest, in mid 2010.

Three MPs cover the Sevenoaks District area.
Area 1 Dartford - Howard Stoate
Fawkham, Hartley, Horton Kirby and South Darenth.
Area 2 Sevenoaks
Swanley, Hextable, New Ash Green, West Kingsdown, Badgers Mount, Otford, Sevenoaks Town, Sundridge, Brasted, Westerham, Knockholt, Kemsing, Crockham Hill, Shoreham, Farningham, Crockenhill and Halstead.
Area 3 Tonbridge & Malling
Edenbridge, Hever, Leigh, Chiddingstone, Penshurst, Cowden and Fordcombe.

The Parliamentary Boundary Commission has recommended changes to constituency boundaries in Kent to take effect at the next general election. The only changes in the Sevenoaks District will see the Hartley and Hodsoll Street Ward of the Sevenoaks District Council become part of the Dartford constituency and the Farningham, Horton Kirby and South Darenth ward become part of the Sevenoaks constituency.
The most recent European elections took place on 10 June 2004.
The European Parliament has members who are elected in the 25 member states of the European Union for a five-year term. The Parliament is based in Strasbourg, Brussels and Luxembourg and takes decisions that affect the continent as a whole.
MEPs (Members of the European Parliament) decide the EU budget with the member states, monitor spending and approve international agreements.
The European Parliament has 10 MEPs from the South-East region.
European elections are held every five years.
