Backing this year's Poppy appeal

News release issued on 29 October 2010

Cllr Keith Loney, Sevenoaks District Council’s Chairman, is urging the local community to back the Royal British Legion’s ‘Poppy Appeal’, which this year is focusing on those affected by the Afghan conflict.

For nearly ninety years, the Royal British Legion has helped members of the serving and ex-service community and their families. The Poppy Appeal provides the main source of funds to maintain the Legion’s many welfare and benevolent schemes, which help in excess of 300,000 people every year.

Last year's appeal raised almost £35 million thanks to the generous contributions from the public.

This year's Poppy Appeal will focus on the Legion's support for armed forces personnel involved in the Afghan conflict. Since 2003, the Legion has helped more than 10,000 serving and ex-service men and women and their families who are part of the Afghan and Iraq generation.

Cllr Keith Loney, says: "The Royal British Legion gives invaluable care and support to thousands of serving and ex-service men and women, including those currently involved in the Afghan conflict. These courageous men and women are working in one of the world's most dangerous places, putting their lives on the line every day to help others. I am asking our residents to dig deep into their pockets and give generously for the sake of those who have served and those who continue to serve in our armed forces."

Poppies will be available at Sevenoaks District Council's main offices in Argyle Road, Sevenoaks.
