With autumn now firmly upon us and colder, dark nights drawing in, residents of the District can keep warm, save money and help the environment during national Energy Saving Week, starting today (25 October).
The annual Energy Saving Week is run by the Energy Saving Trust and, as part of the week, Sevenoaks District Council is encouraging residents to make small energy saving measures which could save them hundreds of pounds each year.
This year’s campaign focuses on managing and minimising energy consumption in the home.
Currently, the energy used to heat, light and run homes across the UK accounts for a large chunk of all carbon emissions. A significant way of saving energy in the home is to prevent heat escaping through the windows, floors, walls or loft.
Another way of saving energy is to buy the most energy efficient products possible. Look for the Energy Saving Recommended logo when buying electrical products, as it is a guarantee that the product is a top energy saver.
The logo appears on over 2,000 products, including integrated digital televisions, boilers, heating controls, insulation, lighting, fridges and fridge freezers, tumble dryers and washing machines.
The latest list of Energy Saving Recommended products can be found at: www.est.org.uk/recommended.
Cllr Carol Clark, Sevenoaks District Council Cabinet member with responsibility for home energy efficiency, says: "Everyone knows what an important global issue climate change is, but not everyone realises that just a few small changes at home can save a lot of energy and money and pay dividends for future generations. Energy Saving Week is a real chance to remind residents of the wide-ranging benefits of home energy efficiency".
The Energy Saving Trust Advice Centre can offer big savings on cavity wall and loft insulation through the Kent Action to Save Heat (KASH) scheme. Contact them on 0800 512012 for more information.
