Keeping to the Code

News release issued on 09 March 2010

Residents with concerns about the conduct of local District, Town or Parish Councillors can contact Sevenoaks District Council to have the matter looked in to.

All elected and co-opted councillors have to keep to a Code of Conduct to ensure that they maintain the high ethical standard expected by the public.

The Code of Conduct covers areas relating to an individual’s behaviour. Examples could include treating others with respect, declaring interests including gifts and hospitality and the disclosure of confidential information.

Complaints go before Sevenoaks District Council’s independently chaired Standards Committee, which decides whether or not to take action. Action can amount to an investigation or alternative measures, such as training or mediation.

Anyone can make a complaint, which must be in writing and relate to a specific councillor or councillors. A complaint form can be downloaded from Sevenoaks District Council’s website.

For more information, please contact the Sevenoaks District Council’s Monitoring Officer on 01732 227245, e-mail members.conduct@sevenoaks.gov.uk or visit www.sevenoaks.gov.uk/councillors.
