Sevenoaks opens up with a day of free events

News release issued on 12 July 2010

Local people can try their hand at a range of free activities at 'Opening Up Sevenoaks' in anticipation of the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics.

Activities are taking place at two town centre sites on Friday 23 July under the banners of 'Opening up sports' and 'Opening up arts'.

Events are open to people of all abilities and are totally free. There's no need to book in advance, just turn up and take part.

Opening Up Sports takes place at Sevenoaks Leisure Centre from 11.30am to 1.30pm and activities include, volleyball and basketball and Boccia and sitting volleyball for disabled people together with other sports and games from the Olympics and Paralympics.

Opening Up Arts will be based at the Stag Community Arts Centre between 11am and 3.30pm. Residents can try their hand at a range of creative activities such as singing, dancing and acting at a musical theatre workshop, jewellery, card and badge making or enjoy a children's story.

Cllr Pat Bosley, Sevenoaks District Council's Cabinet Member with responsibility for sport and art, says: "Opening Up Sevenoaks is a great way to get involved with Olympic and Paralympic activities and to try something new. It's totally free and there's no need to book, and by taking part, you may find a new activity you really enjoy."

The day is supported by the Sevenoaks District Council and the West Kent Arts Partnership with Sencio Community Leisure and the Stag Community Arts Centre.
