A popular website that gives diners and shoppers the opportunity to find out how well food businesses meet food hygiene standards is celebrating its second year.
The service was first launched on 21 January 2008 to encourage food business to improve hygiene standards and empower consumer choice by making details of the Council's routine food hygiene inspections easily available.
For the first time the 'Scores on the Doors' website now has a rating for every restaurant and nearly every other business that sells food in the Sevenoaks District.
Food businesses inspected by Sevenoaks District Council's Environmental Health Team are given a star rating based on the assessment of their food hygiene preparation and food management, from five stars where businesses demonstrate excellent hygiene standards down to zero stars for businesses demonstrating very poor standards.
There are over 650 businesses from the Sevenoaks District on the website and over 230 of those are 4 or 5 stars also since the site went live the number of 0 star premises has dropped, from around 20 August 2009 to 12 in December 2009.
Since the site was launched two years ago, 43,770 requests for information on hygiene ratings for individual food providers have been made on the site.
Cllr Elaine Bracken Sevenoaks District Council's Cabinet member with responsibility for food hygiene, says: "Scores on the Doors allows customers to make more informed choices about where they eat directly from the comfort of their own home. It is encouraging food businesses to improve their hygiene standards."
