Health walk leader training available at Council Offices

News release issued on 19 February 2010

Residents with an interest in walking and helping others in their community can take advantage of free Health Walk Leader training next month.

The free Health Walk Leader Training day will take place on Wednesday 22 March 2010 from 9am to 4pm at The Council Offices, Argyle Road, Sevenoaks.

This training is run by Sevenoaks District Council, in partnership with NHS West Kent, as part of the Walking the Way to Health Initiative. Everyone who completes the free one day course will receive a certificate and will then be able to lead their own health walks.

The training will include a short walk so new walk leaders can learn how to assess potential risks. A free buffet lunch will be provided.

Training places are limited and must be booked in advance.

This training course will give residents the chance to get involved in one of the existing health walks across the District, or to help set up a new one.

Cllr Pat Bosley, Sevenoaks District Council's Cabinet member with responsibility for healthy living, says: "This free course is a great way to help yourself and other people, walking can help to control weight, offers relief from stress and anxiety, and reduces the risk of a wide range of illnesses. What's more it's a sociable and thoroughly enjoyable activity! We expect to receive high demand so don't miss your chance to take part in this amazing opportunity."

To book a place, please call Anton Tavernier-Gustave at Sevenoaks District Council on 01732 227121 or e-mail anton.tavernier-gustave@sevenoaks@gov.uk

Health walks aim to encourage people, particularly those who take little or no exercise, to take part in regular short walks in their communities. Walking is also a fun way to make new friends, whilst also helping to reduce weight and relieve stress and anxiety.
