New guidance to help residents extending their home

News release issued on 28 May 2009

Help is at hand for local people looking to extend their homes following the publication of a new guidance document.

The Residential Extensions Supplementary Planning Document provides design guidance on residential extensions, and is intended to help improve the design quality and appearance of residential extensions in the District.

The document will form part of Sevenoaks District Council’s Local Development Framework, a series of planning policies setting out how the District can be developed up to 2026, and will be used by the Council in deciding planning applications for residential extensions.

A range of topics are covered in the document, such as:

Cllr Gary Williamson, Sevenoaks District Council's Cabinet member with responsibility for Planning Policy, says: "This document should help the many hundreds of applicants that look to build residential extensions each year in the District. They are common developments, and we want to ensure the quality of their design and appearance remains as high as possible."

Local people were asked for their views on a draft version of the document during a six week consultation period that ended on 12 March. A total of 99 representations were received and the document was amended in light of these comments.

The document was formally adopted at Sevenoaks District Council's Cabinet meeting earlier this month (7 May).

The Residential Extensions Supplementary Planning Document can be downloaded from the Council’s website by visiting the Householder Extensions page.

Printed copies of the document are also available to purchase at a price of £10 from the Council offices.
