Sevenoaks opens up!

News release issued on 18 June 2009

A host of free activities, will be opened up to everyone in Sevenoaks at Sevenoaks Leisure Centre and the STAG Community Arts Centre next month as local people are encouraged to try out something new.

Ranging from new age kurling to mosaic making, the activities will be taking place on Friday 24 and Saturday 25 July as part of the ‘London 2012 Open Weekend 2009’ which challenges people to open themselves up to new ideas and challenges, and to do something ‘like never before’.

On Friday 24 July, from 10am to 2pm, Sevenoaks Leisure Centre will hold a Disability Sports Open Day, with football, table tennis, boccia, new age kurling, express circuits and rebound therapy all on offer.

The following day, Saturday 25 July, street dance, modern jive, singing, jewellery making and mosaic making will be available to try at the STAG as part of a Performing and Creative Arts Day from 10am to 4pm.

All events on both these days are totally free, and there is no need to book, just turn up and try them out!

Activities are open to all abilities, however some dance initiatives may not be available to everyone. Anyone under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

The Get S.O.R.T.ed team will also be on hand to offer their expert healthy lifestyle advice and support.

Cllr Pat Bosley, Sevenoaks District Council Cabinet member with responsibility for Communities, says: "This Open Weekend builds on the excitement of the Games getting closer, by marking three years to go until the Opening Ceremony in 2012. There will be a real variety of activities and events on offer, so it really is the perfect opportunity to try out something new."

The London 2012 Open Weekend is an annual UK-wide celebration counting down to the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

For a full activity programme, with timings, visit the London 2012 section of the Council website, or pick up a flyer at the STAG or Sevenoaks Leisure Centre. Alternatively, you can call Sevenoaks District Council on 01732 227000.

This is a partnership project co-ordinated by Sevenoaks District Council, in partnership with Sencio Community Leisure and The STAG Arts Community Centre.
