Young people get their skates on!

News release issued on 10 June 2009

Around 80 young people had a cool time last week when they took a trip to a popular ice skating rink.

The young people, all members of the District's three 8 to 12’s projects that run across Sevenoaks District or the Swanley Town Council’s Passport to Leisure scheme, visited Gillingham Ice Bowl on Wednesday 3 June.

For many it was an opportunity to take their inaugural steps on ice and test out their skating skills for the first time.

Three 8 to 12’s projects are run across Sevenoaks District in Sevenoaks, Swanley and New Ash Green. They are led by West Kent Extra and managed by Sevenoaks District Council, with support from Swanley and Sevenoaks Town Council and Ash-cum-Ridley Parish Council.

The projects provide weekly activities for children aged between 8 and 12 with special activities and outings also organised throughout the year.

Cllr Pat Bosley, Sevenoaks District Council Cabinet Member with responsibility for young people’s issues, says: “The 8 to 12’s projects running in the District have given young people access to some wonderful opportunities in the past couple of years, including a trip on a 70 foot sailing trawler, a flight in a Cessna light aircraft and a visit to the Globe Theatre. I’m sure that whilst there may have been a few tumbles on the ice last week, that they all enjoyed this experience as well!"

This trip was organised by Sevenoaks District Council in partnership with Sencio Community Leisure and is funded by NHS West Kent as part of the National Choosing Health agenda, which aims to make healthy choices easier.
