On your bike!

News release issued on 09 June 2009

Local people can get pedalling next week when National Bike Week rides in to the District.

National Bike Week runs from Saturday 13 June to Sunday 21 June, and this year Bike Week 2009 is encouraging everyone to 'get more out of life' by getting on their bikes, exploring their local communities and finding out just how convenient cycling is for all those short trips made each day.

During Bike Week Shoreham Primary School and St. Mary’s Primary School in Swanley will be encouraging students and parents to cycle to school during the week and, weather permitting, students will also be allowed to cycle round the school grounds during their lunch hour.

Both schools will also have security bike marking available at various sessions throughout the week, which has been organised by Sevenoaks District Council in partnership with West Kent Police (Crime Reduction Dept).

The NHS have also launched 'Bike4Life' as part of their national Change4Life initiative. For more information on biking locally, how to hire bikes and any cycle proficiency training nearby visit the NHS website.

Cllr Pat Bosley, Sevenoaks District Council Cabinet member with responsibility for healthy living, says: "Summer is the perfect time to put away the car keys, get out in the fresh air and get active. National Bike Week provides everyone with the chance to experience just how convenient cycling is as well as highlighting the range of health benefits it provides, so I would encourage as many people as possible to get on their bikes during the week."

Bike Week is the UK’s largest mass participation cycling event, and provides an annual opportunity to promote cycling as a source of fitness and fun, not to mention an alternative form of transport.
