Local residents asked for their views on Badgers Mount commuter parking

News release issued on 21 December 2009

Local residents who live close to Knockholt Station are being asked for their views on proposals to improve commuter parking near the station.

In recent months, Sevenoaks District Council has received a number of comments and complaints about drivers who are parking their cars close to junctions, on the cycle lane and by bus stops, causing potential dangers to other road users.

To address these problems the Council is proposing to move one of the cycle lanes, put double yellow lines down by junctions and to introduce pay and display parking where safe to do so.

A combined ‘pay by phone’ and ‘pay and display’ scheme would probably be provided as a flexible method of payment, which would also reduce the number of ‘pay and display’ machines required.

Any income raised from parking will help pay for the introduction of the parking scheme and on-going enforcement.

Cllr Gary Williamson, the Council’s Cabinet member with responsibility for parking, says: "In recent times, local people and the Parish Council have raised concerns about the commuters who are parking their cars by junctions and on the cycle lane, causing a hazard to other drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. This proposal aims to address this situation whilst providing parking facilities for commuters using the station."

The informal consultation runs until 31 December. Depending on the responses from this consultation, a wider formal consultation could take place in the New Year.
