Time to nominate Your Young Volunteer of the Year

News release issued on 09 December 2009

Residents from across the District are being urged to nominate their unsung young heroes as part of an innovative award scheme.

The Sevenoaks District Young Volunteer of the Year awards, now in their third year, celebrate the good work of young people aged 14 to 18 who, over the course of 2009, have demonstrated commitment, achievement, leadership, innovation and creativity through volunteering.

Awards are available for young people who spend their spare time volunteering in their community, youth club, school, project or off their own backs.

Nomination forms are available at Sevenoaks District Council, town and parish councils, libraries, community and voluntary youth groups and schools. Nominations can also be made online by visiting www.sevenoaks.gov.uk/youngpeople.

The award and runners up prizes of high street vouchers will be presented to the winner and runners up at an award ceremony to be held next year. All nominated young people will receive a certificate.

Funding contributions will also be awarded to the supporting organisations of the winner and runners up, to help them to continue to support youth volunteering in their community and encourage more young people to get involved.

Cllr Pat Bosley, Sevenoaks District Council Cabinet member with responsibility for young people’s issues, says: “This scheme is all about rewarding the many young people who give up their own time to help others, something that isn’t always recognised. So if you do know a young person who has made a difference in their community volunteering, please don’t miss this opportunity to put them forward.”

The closing date for nominations is Friday 26 February 2010.
