Stag transfer moves forward

News release issued on 31 October 2008

Sevenoaks District Council has agreed to further examine Sevenoaks Town Council's proposal to run the Stag theatre and cinema.

At last night's (Thursday 30 October 2008) meeting of the Full Council, which is made up of all 54 District Councillors, it was agreed that Councillors will look at the Town Council's proposal in greater detail at their next meeting on 11 November in 11 days time. As part of the meeting, Sevenoaks Town Council will give a presentation setting out its vision for the Stag over the coming years.

Cllr Elaine Bracken, the Council's Cabinet member with responsibility for the arts, says: "The transfer of the Stag is one of the most significant decisions this Council is likely to take and clearly one that we want to get right. Full Council has agreed a short deferral before it reaches a final decision on 11 November so councillors have more time to fully digest the information given to them and for those with any queries or concerns to put their questions direct to the the Town Council when it makes its presentation."

The Council's Cabinet recommendation that the Stag be transferred to Sevenoaks Town Council as part of a 25 year lease agreement will be put before the Full Council on 11 November.

Full Council also agreed not to pursue Kent County Council's proposal to provide a Gateway facility based in the Stag.
