District residents encouraged to ‘go wild’ this summer!

News release issued on 22 May 2008

Residents of Sevenoaks District with an interest in the natural world can enjoy some free wildlife treats in the next two months.

Wildlife Walks will be held on Wednesday 18 June and Wednesday 16 July, both start from Lullingstone Park Visitors' Centre at 2.30pm. The free walks will be lead by a wildlife expert and will provide an opportunity to look at meadows and wildflowers, and veteran trees and woodlands. There is no need to book in advance, anyone can just turn up on the day.

Then the following month, on Thursday 24 July, a Summer Wildlife Workshop will take place at Sevenoaks Community Centre, starting at 7pm. Places are limited and people are advised to book early to avoid disappointment.

The last wildlife workshop, held in April, proved to be a great success with more than 50 residents of the District attending to pick up a range of tips on how to make their gardens environmentally and wildlife friendly.

The workshops are held as part of Sevenoaks District Council’s “Go Wild” scheme. Run in partnership with North West Kent Countryside Project the scheme aims to encourage people to ensure their gardens are wildlife-friendly habitats.

Free wildlife gardening information packs, with many new and updated factsheets, including information on rare or endangered butterflies, moths, mammals and reptiles are still available from Sevenoaks District Council to Sevenoaks District residents.

Cllr Avril Hunter, Sevenoaks District Council Cabinet Member with responsibility for the environment, says: "It looks like being a busy few months for wildlife lovers as we move towards the summer. With wildlife workshops and wildlife walks on offer there will be plenty of opportunities for green fingered residents to get their gardens in shape and find out even more about the local habitat."

Any Sevenoaks District resident who would like to book a place on the Summer Wildlife Workshop on 24 July, or get hold of a free ‘Go Wild in the Garden’ Information Pack, can contact Simon Davies on 01732 227000, or e-mail sus.dev@sevenoaks.gov.uk
