Help others enjoy a healthy lifestyle!

News release issued on 16 May 2008

There is an opportunity for residents of the District to help others enjoy the benefits of a healthier lifestyle at a free training day next month.

Sevenoaks District Council is holding a free Health Walk Leader Training Day at the Council Offices in Argyle Road, on Monday 30 June from 9am to 4.30pm.

Completion of the course will enable participants to assist with existing health walks currently taking place in the District, or set up their own walking group in their local community.

All participants will also get a certificate recognised by the British Heart Foundation National Centre for Physical Activity and Health, and a free training manual.

This training is run by Sevenoaks District Council, in partnership with West Kent Primary Care Trust, as part of the initative set up by Walking the Way to Health. All participants are required to attend the full day which includes a short walk and a buffet lunch.

Cllr Elaine Bracken, Sevenoaks District Council member with responsibility for healthy living, says: “This training course is a great chance to get involved in health walks across the District, or even set up your own walking group, to promote the numerous benefits walking offers - it can help to control your weight, offer relief from stress and anxiety, and reduce the risk of a wide range of illnesses. What's more it is also a sociable and thoroughly enjoyable activity!"

There are four existing health walks in the District:

A health walk in Kemsing will be starting on Tuesday 17 June at 10.30am at the free car park in the High Street next to the Wheatsheaf pub.

Places on the training course are limited and must be reserved in advance, so book now to avoid disappointment. Contact Layla Powell on 01732 227121, or e-mail healthyliving@sevenoaks.gov.uk for more information.
