Banish the summer blues with five weeks of fun!

News release issued on 14 July 2008

Five weeks of summer fun for young people in the District will kick off in just a few weeks when the popular Youth Zone team return at the end of the month.

The team will deliver Sevenoaks District Council’s free In the Zone summer programme, which promises to be better than ever this year when it visits over 20 towns and villages across the District, offering everything from karate to archery, from a fashion design workshop to a teddy bears picnic!

For the first time ever this year the team will be providing a variety of workshops especially for under eights as well as the normal range of activities for those aged eight and over.

Each week has a theme, and kicking off the first week - 'Sport's Week' - on Monday 28 July, will be First Class Football Coaching at Dunton Green Recreation Ground on Station Road when young people are invited to bring along their kit and improve their football skills.

Sport's week will then see the Youth Zone team visit Edenbridge, for the silly Olympics, New Ash Green for a spot of Shotokan Karate, Chiddingstone for archery and then finally Sevenoaks on Friday 1 August for a multi skills challenge day.

Week two is 'Make-It Week', which includes the opportunity to take part in a jewellery and truck building workshop. Next is 'Challenge Week', when Reptile Razzmatazz will give young people the chance to meet some unusual creatures. 'Performing Arts Week' is the fourth week and includes South African gum boot dancing. Finally 'Party Week' ends the programme with, as its title suggests a week of partying, including a tropical beach party.

As well as the themed events on offer there will also be a whole range of other activities available each day, including circus skills, arts and crafts, face painting, team games and sports, so there will be something for everyone.

Events are free of charge, and run from 11am to 3.30pm every weekday. All children are registered when they enter and leave the site, and those aged eight and above can be left with the Youth Zone trained staff for the day.

Children under eight must be accompanied and supervised by a parent or carer at all times. It is recommended that anyone who intends staying the whole day brings a packed lunch.

Cllr Elaine Bracken, Sevenoaks District Council member with responsibility for young people’s issues, says: “Whilst we can never quite guarantee what kind of weather the British summer will provide, one thing that we do know is that come rain or shine the In the Zone summer programme is always a hit with young people! It's free, offers the chance to try new things and learn new skills and is a great way to stay healthy and active during the summer holidays. The Youth Zone team will visit towns and villages District-wide, so come along and brighten up your summer!"
