More schools than ever have signed up to this year’s ‘Streets Ahead’ programme, which encourages pupils to get to school by the most environmentally friendly from of travel possible.
The aim of ‘Streets Ahead’ is to encourage children of all ages to assess the greenness of their method of transport to school which also helps to make them more aware of the environment. In all, 18 schools have signed up this year, three more than last year and the highest number to date.
The schools complete a short survey that allows the pupils record how they travelled to school. They also get to make a tree poster with special green or brown leaves. Green leaves are given to those who travelled by an environmentally friendly form of transport which includes walking, cycling or car sharing. Brown ones are given to those who travelled to school as the lone passenger in a car.
Cllr Felicity Broomby, Sevenoaks District Council Cabinet Member with responsibility for Community Development, says: "It is great to see so many young people thinking about our future by getting involved in the Streets Ahead survey. The Streets Ahead survey will help us identify transport issues of concern for schools across the District and raising awareness of green travel options. I am delighted that so many schools are this year taking part, making it the most comprehensive survey to date."
Last year, the Streets Ahead survey found that 76% of those who took part travelled to school by walking, cycling and car sharing.
