Edenbridge residents who have taken advantage of the free ‘Shape up’ programme are feeling fitter after collectively losing the best part of half a tonne in weight.
According to the most recent evaluation of the project, some 180 people have taken part from April 2004 through to June 2007. The average weight loss for each participant has been 2.75kg or 6lbs. In total this comes to about 500kg or some 1,100lbs - as much as a fully grown Polar Bear!
The 'Shape up' programme runs on Mondays from 2pm to 3pm at Edenbridge Leisure Centre. It aims to give support and practical advice to help participants lose weight and lead healthier lives. New members are always welcome.
Activities include talks from a trained dietician, a question and answer session, a free information pack and a private weigh in.
The evaluation found that since attending the classes those taking part are making positive lifestyle changes such as doing more physical activities, drinking more water and eating more vegetables. Everyone who has taken part has said that they are motivated to make lifestyle changes as a result of this course.
Cllr Felicity Broomby, Sevenoaks District Council's Member with responsibility for healthy living, says: "I applaud those who have taken part in the 'Shape up' programme that is helping dozens of Edenbridge residents to lead fitter and healthier lives. The programme offers a unique opportunity to learn how to make small lifestyle changes to improve health in a supportive environment. Best of all, unlike many other many other weight control programmes, it's completely free".

The programme is a partnership project delivered by Sevenoaks District Council and West Kent Primary Care Trust.
