Take strides towards a healthy New Year!

News release issued on 03 December 2007

Sevenoaks residents who want to get fitter and healthier during 2008 can stick to any New Year's resolutions they make when a free weekly health walk starts in the town next month.

The new Sevenoaks Town health walk launches on Thursday 17 January 2008 at 10.30am at Sevenoaks Leisure Centre, with the beautiful scenery of Knole Park providing the backdrop for the walk.

Everyone who turns up for the inaugural walk will be given a free stepometer so they can work out how many steps they take. Just 45 minutes of walking is enough time to take about 3,700 steps and burn off approximately 160 to 200 calories!

The walks are suitable for any age or ability, as well as people in wheelchairs or with pushchairs, and last around 45 minutes.

Cllr Felicity Broomby, Sevenoaks District Council Cabinet Member with responsibility for healthy living, says: "This is a real opportunity to make a great start to the New Year and begin leading a healthier and more active lifestyle in 2008. Walking is fun, free and a good way to meet new people, plus with this walk you get the opportunity to enjoy the picturesque surroundings of Knole Park - what more could you ask for!"

Angela Painter, Public Health Specialist for West Kent Primary Care Trust, adds: "The Primary Care Trust is delighted that the people of Sevenoaks are being offered this great opportunity to improve their physical and emotional well-being in such a pleasant way."

This new free health walk has been organised by Sevenoaks District Council in Partnership with Sencio Community Leisure and is funded by West Kent Primary Care Trust as part of the national 'Choosing Health' agenda which aims to make healthy choices easier.

Everyone who turns up will be encouraged to walk at their own pace. It is suggested people dress appropriately according to the weather and sensible, comfortable footwear is a must.
