Celebrating Young People 2009 - A Sevenoaks District Council Conference held at Hextable School
The conference was held on Friday 24th April at Hextable Secondary School. Over 200 people came to help celebrate the achievements of local children and young people and help us to launch the Young People's Action Plan 2009 - 2012 with lots of our Partners and lots of young people!
The Sevenoaks District Young People's Action Plan (YPAP) was developed after consulting over 3000 children and young people and we aim to continue to involve children and young people throughout it's delivery - making sure that they have a voice in activities and services being planned and an influence on important issues.

The conference was attended by around 100 young people from schools and youth groups across the District. We had students from Wildernesse School, Hextable School, Swanley Technology College, Valence School, Dorton House School, and Furness School. There were also young people from Edenbridge Youth Forum, EZ Stepz Dance, Wild Wing Arts Youth Theatre, Sevenoaks Skatepark User Group and those nominated for Young Volunteer of the Year.
The Question Time Panel was interesting. With questions put forward by the audience, our panel, including a police officer, a head teacher, a youth worker, the Chairman of Sevenoaks District Council, NHS West Kent, and 2 representatives from both Wildernesse School council and Hextable School council.
Lots of youth projects bought along displays about the work they are doing. These included:
It was a great day and we had loads of positive feedback from adults and young people in the audience:
We had some feedback from young people that there was too much talking and there should be more DVDs and things to do. Some of the other delegates suggested there should have been more information about the Action Plan itself and more information about achievements of the young volunteers.
The conference officially launched the District's Young People's Action Plan 2009 - 2012 and hosted the award ceremony for Young Volunteer of the Year 2009.
