We had a brilliant week with more that 270 children and young people joining in with the fun in the Easter Holidays!
The Youth Zone Team visited five different venues across the Sevenoaks District during the first week of the Easter holidays, providing free fun days out with sports and activities, arts and crafts, games, circus skills and fun and games.
The week of activities was organised by Sevenoaks District Council and funded by West Kent Primary Care Trust. This initiative is part of the national ‘Choosing Health’ Agenda to make healthier choices easier and is provided in partnership with the Healthy Lifestyles Project.

Monday we were in Swanley
Some lovely people from Skipping-Workshops (follow this link to go to the website) came to teach people about different skipping techniques and to try and get some skipping records in place for the most skips - including Continuous Crossovers, Double Dutch and Pretzels.
We also had the tallest Jenga tower of the week - with an egg balanced on top and loads of creative people who made lots of things to take home including masks, jewellery, cress heads and grass heads!
Tuesday we went to Sevenoaks
Unfortunately we could not have a go at New Age Kurling (follow this link to find out more from their website) due to staff illness but that didn't stop loads of children from having loads of fun - there was a lot of plate spinning, block building, game playing and running around in Sevenoaks -we got some big squashy balls and set them loose in the
small hall and children had a great time!
We also did apron designing, self portraits and jewellery making in the crafts area. Children as young as 20 months joined in with Fruit and Vegetable Bingo - our fun game to test children's knowledge of healthy foods. It was great fun and everyone won a prize for getting a bingo line on their card.
Wednesday we were in Edenbridge
A roller skating rink (provided by Baseline - follow this link to visit their website) was the main attraction for the day here - we took over the old gymnasium at the Edenbridge Centre and invited children to come and have a go. Almost 80 children took up the challenge and had a go on 8 wheels. There was a lot of ups and downs but I think everyone came off the rink with more skills that when they started!
We made a lot of grass heads as well on this day - using old pairs of tights, sawdust and grass seed to create a little person whose hair will grow at home - these were very popular! We were also designing egg cups and bookmarks and doing more self portraits.
Thursday was Knockholt's turn
We always get a lot of younger brothers and sisters on the summer programme and wanted the Easter programme to give the younger children things to do too so Scallywags minigym (follow this link to visit their website) came along with some of their equipment and created a course for children to follow - it was really good with things to climb on, balance on, jump on and slide down.
There was also a lot of plate spinning, block building, games of 4 in a Row and spinning around in our brilliant top! children looked at and handled the fruit and vegetables, got their faces painted (bring on the tigers!) and also designed some lovely aprons for using at home and made pom poms and jewellery to take home too.
Friday we finished off our week in New Ash Green
B-Better (follow this link to visit the website) came down to give us some break dancing tips and led a group through movement, style and attitudes needed to dance like a pro. By the end of the day we had children spinning, body popping and doing some brilliant acrobatics! It was good fun.
There were lots of balancing activities going on including balancing our massive egg on your head (Well done Victoria!) and children on the Pedal Gos, in the Spinning Top, the See-Saw and on the Pogo Bouncers! Even a short power cut didn't stop the fun!
Loads more arts and crafts were made to take home and I expect there is an army of grass heads sprouting around the Sevenoaks District as this is being written!
Now we are planning for the In the Zone Summer Programme starting on 28th July!
