Sevenoaks District Play Strategy
The Sevenoaks District Play Strategy was adopted by the District Council in February 2007. The strategy was developed by a multi-agency Play Partnership which includes representatives from the voluntary sector, Kent County Council, Health, the Police and parish councils.
Following consultation with children, young people and their parents, the document sets out a vision for play provision in the District over the next three years.
The strategy supported a successful funding application to the Big Lottery Fund's Children's Play programme for over £200,000 which will provide new play opportunities for children and young people across the District.
The play projects funded by the Big Lottery fund Children’s Play Programme are:
- King George’s Field, Westerham – the play area has been improved with the installation of new play equipment including a climbing cone. Westerham Parish Council officially opened the new facility in October 2007.
- Greatness skate park, Sevenoaks – a new wheeled sports area was opened in October 2008 by Sevenoaks Town Council, which also contributed £60,000 to the project. The skate park is suitable for bikes, skateboards and in-line skating and was designed by local young people and Skaterham.
- Swanley Park Water Play – opened by Swanley Town Council in May 2008, this new improved play area includes water jets and a “mushroom” which at the press of a button releases water on to anyone standing under it. The facility also has improved access for disabled children.
- Stangrove Park, Edenbridge – a new “Abilitywhirl” roundabout was installed by Edenbridge Town Council in April 2008. The roundabout provides a fun activity for disabled and non-disabled children.
- Play Days – organised by West Kent Extra, 40 free play days were provided across the Sevenoaks District in August 2008. There were over 1400 attendances and children enjoyed a wide range of activities including arts and crafts, army assault course, parachute games and team games. Further Play Days will be organised for April and August 2009.
- Harvestfield, Crockenhill – improved access at this site is being led by Crockenhill Parish Council. The park provides 22 acres of woodland and open space for children to use for free play. Improved disabled access, signage and seating will make it more child and family friendly. The project will be completed in early 2009.
