Paralympic Road Cycling events in Sevenoaks District

Host Council of the 2012 Paralympic GamesThe London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) announced in May 2011 that Brands Hatch, in West Kingsdown in the Sevenoaks District, will be the venue for the prestigious Paralympic Road Cycling events between 5 and 8 September 2012.

The former F1 Grand Prix circuit will account for approximately half of the course, including the start and finish. The remaining part of the race will take place on local roads nearby. View the 2012 Paralympic cycle route ( PDF File 161KB file details).

The course allows LOCOG to use much of the existing venue infrastructure at Brands Hatch and is approximately one hour away from the Athletes’ Village in the Olympic Park.

There will be a total of 32 road cycling events with 155 men and 70 women athletes from 40 nations taking part. Events consist of mass start road races and individual and team time trials for athletes with a range of disabilities including visual impairments, cerebral palsy and amputations who will compete on bicycles, tricycles, tandems and hand cycles.

Tickets cost £10 for adults and £5 for people aged 16 and under and 60 and over. Discounted tickets are available for large groups of people. Tickets are on sale until Monday 6 February 2012. Visit the 2012 ticketing website to purchase tickets. Spectators can watch the races for free from some of the roads outside of Brands Hatch.

London 2012 Torch Relay
The Olympic Flame will travel through Seal, Sevenoaks, Riverhead and Bessels Green on Friday 20th July 2012. Spectators should be able to get a magnificent view of the Torch from the roadside and residents are encouraged to come out and celebrate this ‘once in lifetime’ occasion. Specific details of the route will be announced in July to local press and on the council’s website.

Seal, Sevenoaks, Riverhead and Bessels Green are four of over 1,000 villages, towns and cities announced by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) through which the Olympic Flame will be carried by Torchbearers during the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay. Click on the link to view the interactive map at to find the place nearest to you that the Olympic Flame will be carried through.

Pre-Games Training Camps
Kent, with its excellent transport links to the main Olympic venues in London and to mainland Europe, has secured more Pre-Games Training Camps than any other county. The Sevenoaks District has three venues that are Pre-Games Training Camps. Brands Hatch, in West Kingsdown, is a venue for cycling and Penshurst Off Road Circuit will host mountain bike training. Sevenoaks School is a training venue for a range of sports, including archery, athletics, basketball and fencing. Find out more about Pre-Games Training Camps.

Kent 2012 Campaign
The Kent Coordinating Group for the 2012 Games was set by Kent County Council to ensure that the legacy of the Olympics and Paralympics could be maximised for all Kent residents, businesses and visitors. Find out more about the Kent 2012 Campaign.

Volunteering for the Games
The Kent event Team is a partnership between Kent County Council and the voluntary sector, aimed at recruiting volunteers for events and one-off sport, leisure and cultural activities across the county, including the build up to the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. Find out more about the Kent eVent Team.

Transport for the London 2012 Games
The official park and ride for the Olympic Park is Ebbsfleet International station to the north of the Sevenoaks District. During the Games, Javelin Trains from Ebbsfleet will take just under ten minutes to get to Stratford International station. View details of the transport options for London 2012.

Tourism and the London 2012 Games
Approximately 70% of the visitors to the London Games will be British and 30% will be from overseas. The benefits of the London 2012 Games are likely, therefore, to be seen in terms of tourist numbers. Find out more about tourism opportunities from the London 2012 Games.

Tourism businesses and the London 2012 Games
In partnership with London 2012's Nations and Regions Group, VisitBritain has launched a website www.Tourism2012Games.org dedicated to help the tourist industry get involved with the 2012 Games. Businesses can find out how they can make the most of the 2012 Games, including how to make their business more accessible and sign up for a free Tourism2012Games newsletter.

Legacy of the London 2012 Games
It is expected that the London 2012 Games will have a lasting legacy right across the UK, in terms of culture, education, tourism, volunteering, and participation in sport and healthy activities. London 2012 will generate additional hotel and bed and breakfast spaces throughout the country to accommodate the increased numbers of tourists and the number of volunteers relating to sports and sporting activities will increase.

In the Sevenoaks District, Sencio Community Leisure has developed the Get-Active website, a free website for people, which allows local community groups, clubs and other local providers to list, access and search sports and other activities. View the get-active healthy activities website.
