Definition of a House in Multiple Occupation (HMO)
Under the Housing Act 2004 a property is defined as being a House in Multiple Occupation (HMO) if it is one of the following:
- A shared house lived in by people who belong to more than one family/household and who share one or more facilities (section 254(2)).
- A house in bedsits lived in by people who belong to more than one family/household and who share one or more facilities (section 254(4)).
- An individual flat lived in by people who belong to more than one family/household and who share one or more facilities (section 254(3)).
- A building of self-contained flats that do not meet the 1991 Building Regulation standards (section 257).
