Slim Your Bin
There are many ways in which we can all help to reduce unnecessary waste and increase the amount of materials to be recycled. Shop like a recycler: inform supermarkets and retailers when a product is over-packaged by the way you shop!
Buy eggs and the like in recyclable cardboard cartons, not polystyrene or plastic
Buy drinks and alcoholic beverages in plastic bottles or cans, not glass or Tetra Pac containers
Buy pasta, tea, cereal and the like in cardboard rather than plastic packaging
Buy bananas, cauliflower and other large fruits and vegetables without an extra plastic bag
Buy prepared foods like fish, olives and spreads in tins if there is a choice, rather than in glass or plastic containers
Avoid double-bagging your shopping
When you buy fresh foods like fruit and vegetables, keep them cool, and in an air-tight container to retain moisture and freshness. Remember that frost-free refrigerators' will suck the moisture out of fruit, veg, and other foods if they are not properly protected.
Compost your kitchen peelings and garden waste at home.
Avoid using disposable, single-use items like plastic cups and plates, paper napkins, disposable razors, and disposable nappies.
