Home composting

Making your own garden compost is easy. You can produce material for your own gardening needs, and by doing so reduce the amount of rubbish you put out to the kerb.

Over 25% of your rubbish is made up of vegetable and fruit peelings, left-over or unused raw fruit and vegetables, and garden waste. These and many other compostable household wastes can be easily composted at home.  Please note that processed foods and cooked foods should not be composted at home, as such items will attract pests.

All you need is a little space of earth in your garden, and you can produce rich compost for your plantings.  Most garden centres in the District sell compost bins, so why not ask about one the next time you stop by to purchase your gardening needs?

Want a compost bin for your own garden at a reduced price?
Visit the 'recyclenow' website to view a range of compost bins to fit most gardens, or download a recyclenow compost bin order form ( PDF File 251KB file details) to print and then send in the post.  Please note that the 'recyclenow' compost bin scheme is not affiliated directly with Sevenoaks District Council.  All enquiries should be directed to 'recyclenow' on 0845 077 0757 or by following instructions on the 'recyclenow' compost bin webpage.

To find out more about composting in general, visit the Composting Association website.

Sevenoaks District Council also supports the Compost Advisor Project by liaising with local residents and Advisors. More information is contained within the Sustainable Development section of our website or by visiting the 'Events in Your Area' section of the 'recyclenow' compost page.
