With increasing concerns about the health and environmental effects of disposable nappies, more and more parents are choosing re-usable 'Real Nappies.' Up to five percent of all the rubbish collected from Kent residents is made up of disposable nappies.
Real nappies have come a long way since the boiling and soaking of older-style 'terry' nappies. There are many new types that look like disposables, with breathable outer wraps or all-in-ones. They are easy to wash and dry - although no bleach should be used.
Local Real Nappy schemes are coordinated by Kent County Council, which encourages parents to choose washable cloth nappies for their babies. Around 10% of the babies born in Kent now happily wear cloth.
Kent County Council offer a reward of up to £30 to parents who choose cloth nappies for their baby. For more information and advice on the types of cloth nappies available and where to buy them, please contact the KCC West Kent Cloth Nappy Co-ordinator Teresa Ridge on tel. 020 8325 0285 or by e-mail to teresa.ridge@kent.gov.uk. Or visit the KCC website to find out more about cloth nappies and cloth nappy services.
There is also a local Kent Cloth Nappy Network group that meets on the first Wednesday of every month from 10am to 11.30am, in the Jubilee Room at the Angel Centre in Tonbridge. Anyone interested in cloth nappies is invited to drop in to see samples of the types of nappies available and find out more information on how to use and where to buy. Refreshments are provided and soft play equipment is available for babies and toddlers. There is no charge for these sessions.
