Activities that may damage or destroy trees
The following activities may damage or destroy trees.
-
Lighting fires - the heat rises to great heights and kills foliage quickly
-
Digging trenches - damages roots causing die back of the upper parts of the tree
-
Storing fuel oils and noxious chemicals
-
Raising or lowering soil levels
-
Storing soil or compost against the tree trunks.
Many of the above affect tree roots. Please remember that a tree's root system is typically concentrated within the uppermost 600mm of the soil and that it is vulnerable to damage.
If a tree is protected by a TPO then the order will also protect the root system and the soil that it is growing in.
