20 November 2008The Council is gradually reviewing the boundaries of all 40 designated conservation areas within the District. The designation and review of conservation areas is a statutory duty for the District Council and derives from national legislation.
Conservation Areas are local areas of special architectural or historic interest where it is desirable to preserve or enhance the character or appearance.
These areas normally incorporate several of the following factors:
Conservation areas can include spaces which provide the setting to areas of architectural or historic interest where trees form an important part of the character or areas where there is a need for appropriate standards of design for new development or redevelopment.

The views of interested parties including landowners, businesses, parish and amenity groups will be taken into consideration prior to designation. The following area has recently been reviewed by the Council.
Sevenoaks High Street Conservation Area was first designated in 1971, reviewed in 1992. In March 2001 the Council adopted and published an appraisal of the area which suggested a review of the boundary. The latest review of the Conservation Area is based on that earlier work and a more recent survey. The revised area was redesignated in January 2008 and has boundary changes which reflect development completed since 1992 and other minor amendments to include important trees. Comments on this review are now closed.
