About the scheme

What is 'Scores on the Doors'?
'Scores on the Doors' is a scheme which allows the public to view the hygiene rating following a programmed food hygiene inspection carried out by the Council's Environmental Health Team. The score will be in the form of a star rating.
Is this a national scheme?

There are around 80 councils displaying information on the Scores on the Doors website. The Food Standards Agency has consulted on proposals for a national scheme.

More information about the schemes, the consultation, and a list of participating councils can be found on the Food Standards Agency website.

Which businesses will get a star rating?
All businesses that form part of the Council's inspection programme, this will include places like restaurants, takeaways, supermarkets and pubs.
Are there any businesses not part of the scheme?
The exceptions are sole traders working from private addresses, such as childminders, and meat cutting plants and slaughterhouses.

What is the scoring scheme based on?

The scoring system is based on three criteria taken from the Food Standards Agency's statutory risk rating system:
  • The food hygiene practices and procedures in place (including prevention of cross contamination, chilling, cooking and temperature control)
  • The structure and overall cleanliness of the premises
  • Confidence in management of the business's food safety controls
Does the scheme reflect at all on the quality of food in an establishment?
The scheme is not about the quality of food a premises serves, it is about how clean the premises is, and how well food hygiene is managed.
