Garden walls

Many garden walls are exempt from building regulations. However, if they are constructed poorly they become dangerous through instability, settlement and cracking. This guide is to help you design and build a safe and strong garden wall.

The rule of thumb is adequate for normal use, but further guidance is required in other circumstances including:

Walls in areas with poor ground conditions (the building control section can advise you on expected ground conditions)
Sloping sites or sites with significant changes in level on each side of the wall
Where the wall may be subject to additional loading such as vehicular access, on a public right of way, or due to a large gate or door

Construction notes

This guide is produced for general guidance within Sevenoaks District and is not an alternative to proper structural advice. If you are in doubt about using the guide, you should approach a qualified engineer or surveyor. Sevenoaks District Council can accept no liability for walls designed in accordance with this guide.

Planning permission may still be required to erect a garden wall.

For further advice contact the Development Control section or the Building Control section.
