Town and parish councils

Town and parish councils are the level of administration closest to the people of a community.

Sevenoaks District includes three town councils and 27 parish councils divided into 54 town or parish wards. They have a varying number of councillors.

A typical town or parish council provides or maintains a range of important community assets. They may include allotments, common land, woodland, a burial ground, a play area, tennis courts and other sports facilities, a museum, litter bins, seats, car parks, a pond, crime prevention schemes and an emergency planning team.

A number of local town and parish councils also secure funding and support from the District and County Council for maintaining or improving facilities such as halls and playing fields.

Town and parish councils are consulted about all planning applications affecting their areas. As the planning authority, Sevenoaks District Council must take into account any comments they make when reaching a decision. Town and parish councillors are elected every four years at the same time the District Council election takes place. The next elections are planned for May 2011.
