Local democracy

Sevenoaks District residents are represented at the European, national and local level by people elected to democratic bodies. Each body has differing roles and responsibilities.

The Houses of Parliament

MPs (Members of Parliament) are elected to Parliament in Westminster. Parliament has three main functions:

General elections are held every five years. The next general elections are planned to take place on 7 May 2015.

Members of the European Parliament in Sevenoaks District

The most recent European elections took place during June 2009.

The European Parliament has members who are elected in the 27 member states of the European Union for a five-year term. The Parliament is based in Strasbourg, Brussels and Luxembourg and takes decisions that affect the continent as a whole.

MEPs (Members of the European Parliament) decide the EU budget with the member states, monitor spending and approve international agreements.

The European Parliament has 10 MEPs from the South-East region.
