How your Council Tax is worked out

Council Tax is a local tax, set by councils and other local authorities to help pay for a proportion of their services.

In Sevenoaks District, local residents' Council Tax is made up of five preceptors: Kent County Council, Sevenoaks District Council, your local town or parish council, Kent Police and Kent Fire & Rescue Service. More information is available in the Council's Finances section of this website, which also has details of where the Council spends its money.

You can view the leaflets that give more information about the income and expenditure of these preceptors by selecting the preceptor name that you would like details for:

Kent Fire & Rescue Service 2008/09 ( PDF 121K file details)
Sevenoaks District Council 2008/09 ( PDF 943K file details)

Leaflets from previous years can be found on the Council Tax Leaflets page.

Council Tax applies to all domestic properties, including houses, bungalows, flats, maisonettes, mobile homes or houseboats, whether owned or rented.

When the Council Tax system was introduced all properties were valued and put into a 'valuation band'. The valuation bands for homes in England are based on their value on 1 April 1991, not their current value. The valuation band determines how much Council Tax you pay. Click on the following link find out more about valuation bands.

Each of the five authorities in Sevenoaks District sets a Council Tax rate expressed as the annual levy on a band D property (the national average banding) inhabited by two adults liable to pay Council Tax. This decision automatically sets the amounts levied on all types of households and dwellings. Discounts are available for people living alone, on benefit or on a low income. Click on the following links for details of discounts or exempt dwellings.

For further information about the Council Tax system, visit the Council Tax pages on the Directgov website.
