Liability
The Council Tax bill is usually payable by the owner-occupiers or tenants. The bill is sent to those the Council believes to be responsible for paying the Council Tax - the 'liable' persons. If you feel that you are not liable, you should contact the Council Tax Section immediately.
People are jointly responsible for paying the bill if they are living in the same property and they have the same legal interest in the property (e.g. joint owners or joint tenants they are living together as man and wife or civil partners).
Please contact Council Tax section if you would like more information.
Penalties
Where a liable person is required to provide information to the Council and fails to do so or knowingly provides information which is inaccurate, a penalty of £50 may be imposed on the person concerned. Continued failure to provide the Council with accurate information may result in a further penalty of £200 being imposed.
