Help if you’ve lost your job

Losing your job or being made redundant can be stressful and distressing but it is important to make sure that your employer allows you your legal rights if they let you go.

For example, you have the right not to be dismissed unfairly and your employer must not select you unfairly for redundancy. Your employer must also pay you any money you are owed and you may also have the right to a redundancy payment.  Advice on your employment rights and on redundancy can be obtained from your local Citizens Advice Bureau.

It is important to try to stay positive and access the help available to find another job. The Careers Advice Service can give you support in completing application forms and preparing for job interviews.  If you have been unemployed for a long time, or are a lone parent, leaving school or college, are disabled or are aged over 50, there is extra help available.

You could take this opportunity to improve your skills or retrain, some courses are free and or are available at a subsidised rate.
