General Register Office
The General Register Office provides information about how to register a birth or death in England and Wales, how to go about getting married or form a civil partnership, how to obtain a birth certificate, a marriage certificate, a civil partnership certificate or a death certificate, and how to use the services at the Family Records Centre. Kent County Council Registration Services - Birth, Marriage and Death Certificates
Official records of births, deaths and marriages in England and Wales began on 1 July 1837 (separate systems operate for Scotland and Northern Ireland).
All the registers of births, deaths and marriages completed in Kent (except in the Medway towns of Chatham, Gillingham, Rochester or the London Boroughs of Bexley, Bromley and Greenwich who hold their own records going back to the 1 July 1837) since 1 July 1837 are in the custody of the Superintendent Registrar for Kent. Each register is indexed and it is these indexes that are used to find specific entries.
It is possible to for records on-line. The Superintendent Registrar can also supply a certified copy of any birth, death or marriage entry from any register within her custody. You will have to pay a fee for each certificate.
